What is it like to do a Risk Committee?

With the deadline of the Active Members recruitment approaching, some Active Memberships will also come to an end. For today's Risk Magazine Article, the Committee Members looked back on their year within Risk and on the events and activities they organized!

Fleur van Veen – Accountancy Tour

About a year ago, I applied for the Risk Accountancy Tour Committee. I have always liked to do activities next to my study, however, up till then, I never did anything which was actually related to my study. Since I did my bachelors in Business Administration with an Accountancy profile, I decided to do something related to accountancy this time. I got into contact with someone from Risk and she really got me enthusiastic about the Accountancy Tour. The committee exists of four people and I got selected to be the External Relations of the committee. This means that I had to keep in contact with the recruiters of the companies which we were going to visit during our tour, and keep them updated about all our plans. I really liked this function because it gave me the opportunity to see these companies in another light and to get to know the recruiters in a different, more personal way.

Although I am very happy to have gained these qualities, the social part of the Accountancy Tour Committee was the best part for me

I learned a lot during these few months, but in particular I learned to communicate, to collaborate, and to deal with unforeseen situations. Although I am very happy to have gained these qualities, the social part of the Accountancy Tour Committee was the best part for me. It gave me the opportunity to meet a lot of new people, of which some I can now call my friends. As a committee, we tried to eat together every Monday and we frequently visited activities organized by Risk, which were always very fun to attend. Taken this all together, I am very glad that I applied for the Risk Accountancy Week committee and I would really recommend it if you like to get to know new people, if you have a passion for organizing activities, and of course if you have some affection with the world of accountancy.

Risk Conference – Katja van Oosterzee

This year, I dedicated my time to organize a new edition of the Risk Conference, the largest financial student conference of the Netherlands! With a group of nine other enthusiastic students, I had the pleasure to experience how to organize a great event from scratch. We ended up with a conference that was both informing and entertaining towards our fellow students as to our external business parties with the high professional standards which our external parties are used to.

There are more things at play than you can imagine in the beginning.

We started with many brainstorm sessions to establish a concept and to elaborate this until we finalized our theme for this year. After that, we started organizing all logistic, technical and administrative elements around this theme. There are more things at play than you can imagine in the beginning. First, it felt a bit overwhelming, but as your progress, you come to realize that this allows so much space for your ideas and creativity as well as it challenges you to make cuts in what is possible and what is not.

All in all, I look back at a year in which I learned a lot and had the privilege to work closely with a great group of people and to meet al lot of new people working for interesting companies. I would definitely recommend such an experience to everyone!

Niels Kloosterman - Investment & Accountancy Evenings

After being a part of the Investment & Accountancy Evenings for almost a year I had the opportunity to organize three Investment and two Accountancy Evenings with my fellow committee members. I really liked the way we planned, communicated and organized the evenings and I think we did this in a professional way. The communication between my fellow committee members was always in a fun and good way. The mentors of our committee were always available to help and give advice, when we had troubles in certain situations and gave us good feedback. I think I learned a lot by doing this committee, especially how to communicate with company’s and how to get in contact with different companies. Through Risk and the IAE I also had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people and friends which was also a reason why I joined the IAE.

I think I learned a lot by doing this committee, especially how to communicate with company’s and how to get in contact with different companies.

I think the Investment & Accountancy Evenings are a very good event to listen to an interesting speaker in quite an informal yet an educative way. The IAE is also a great event for people who don’t attend Risk events too often. You are able to get a first insight of the study association and what Risk all has to offer. My experience with Risk has always been a positive one from the moment I first joined Risk last year. They always want to do everything in a professional way and make sure that everything was organized in detail so that there was only a small room for error. After all I am very glad that I made the choice to apply for the IAE and hope I will enjoy a lot more events and fun times with Risk for the upcoming years.

Fleur Ballast - Risk Activity Committee

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about my experiences within the Activity Committee: what a great time! I thought the Activity Committee was a very nice committee to start with, and it definitely was. You get to know the association very well and meet so many new people! What I like most about the Activity Committee compared to most of the other committees is that you organize several activities, instead of one activity, in your committee year: 4 activities and a city trip. You are also involved in some formal activities, such as guest lectures and pick your profile. It is also very nice that you get to know many active members, because they often participate at least once in your activities.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about my experiences within the Activity Committee: what a great time!

I have learned a lot by organizing these activities. For example, you will learn how to contact companies, how to plan, how to promote and most importantly: how to deal with your responsibilities. What I have specifically learned within my position: working with InDesign, scheduling promotional moments and contacting teachers for (promoting) your activities. The Risk Board was always there to help you if you were unable to find a solution or had a question. This also gives a good picture of the entire association, because everyone within risk is very accessible and so nice. I can certainly say with full conviction that this committee, my committee members and Risk have made my year a lot more fun!

Bram Collet - Controlling Tour

Hi, my name is Bram Collet and I joined the Controlling Tour committee last year. I first joined the Accountancy Tour as a participant. Here you are able to get to know six major accounting firms and after this experience, I wanted to organize such a tour myself. The nice thing about the Controlling Tour Committee is that you organize an event where a group of students meets potential future employers from various sectors! As a company contact, you approach companies that seem interesting to you and call various recruiters from large companies. You will therefore learn to talk to recruiters yourself and plan a company visit together, but also to deal with some rejections.

you organize an event where a group of students meets potential future employers from various sectors!

Last year, for example, we contacted construction company Volkerwessels, postal company PostNL, consultancy company FinanceIdeas, food company Unilever, hospital AmsterdamUMC and bank ING. We had cases, tours, lunches and dinners with financial employees. It was interesting to have contact with so many different companies and I really liked that about this committee. Joining the Controlling Tour is very interesting for any financial bachelor or master, so you have a diverse  committee and also the participants have different educational backgrounds. You learn a lot from such a committee and it is useful to get in touch with potential employers, but don't forget the benefits of being an active member at Risk. You get to know new people on the active members days and weekends, I really enjoyed paintballing and of course winning the active members quiz during the last active members weekend 😉.

Risk is currently looking for new Active Members for all the committees mentioned above! Are you interested in one of the committees, or have any questions regarding the Active Membership, feel free to send us an email. We are happy to answer all of your questions!
